Southview has hired longtime assistant girls basketball coach Tyler Bates as its girls varsity head coach.
Bates was an assistant coach at Southview for the last six years, including a varsity assistant under Kelly Heil last season.
Bates is a health and physical education teacher at Southview. He has coached girls basketball within the Cougars program for the past six years at multiple levels.
Bates takes over for Heil, who put together a record of 90-43 record since she took over at her alma mater in 2017-18. Heil is a member of both the Sylvania (2009) and Ohio Wesleyan University (2015) athletic halls of fame. Heil holds the school's scoring record (1,442 career points) and was named first-team All-Ohio as a senior in 2001.
Southview finished 16-9 overall and 8-6 in the Northern Lakes League last season. The Cougars reached the Division I district semifinals.
Bates has also been an assistant baseball coach at Southview for the past five seasons. His hiring is pending the approval of the Sylvania Board of Education.
