Springfield's Scott breaks two meet records at Division I district track and field meet

Maira Scott put up a performance for the ages on Friday.

The Springfield junior speedster broke a 36-year-old record in the girls 100-meter dash, then broke a 16-year-old record in the 200 en route to earning three victories.

She was one of several area standouts to have a stellar showing on the final day of the Division I district track and field meet at St. Francis de Sales High School.

“Honestly, I would probably say this is one of the best days of my life just to be like that,” Scott said. “I’ve worked towards moments like this and prayed for it, and I’ve been patient so whatever God throws at me, I’m able to handle and adversity’s only made me stronger and I’m just very lucky and excited about everything that went down today.”

The top four finishers in each event advanced to next week’s Division I regional meet in Amherst.

St. John’s Jesuit, led by sophomore sprinter Caleb Kelly’s four victories, won its third consecutive district championship with 133 points. St. Francis was runner-up with 101.25.

Perrysburg’s girls claimed its second straight title with 125 points, outlasting second-place Whitmer (102.5).

A week after winning the 100, 200, and 400 for the third straight year at the Northern Lakes League championships, Scott was at it again.

She started with a win in the 100 in a blistering 11.69 seconds, breaking the mark by Scott’s Latricia Joyner (11.7) in 1987. After Scott teamed up with Nadia Turnbough, Kalaia Taylor, and Aleah Hodges to win the 400 relay in 49.20, she cruised to the 200 title in 23.49.

The mark in her final event broke the record by Bowsher’s Meshawn Graham (23.96) in 2007.

“At the end of the day, my biggest goal is not necessarily to chase times, but to be able to better myself every race,” Scott said. “So, point out my flaws, this and that, and then after practice and between meets, just work on the little things and be able to develop my mechanics, which will get me to run times like that.

“It’s the little things, executing and relaxing and trusting my training in the process.”

St. John’s speed in the sprints resulted in six victories on the track. Kelly bolted to individual wins in the 100 in a personal record 10.58, which was less than one-tenth of a second from breaking a 40-year-old district record, as well as the 200 in 21.49.

“He’s the real deal. He’s a really special talent,” St. John’s coach Steve Spenthoff said. “We’re really fortunate to have him in blue and gold, and he really works hard every day in practice.

“I know it’s cliche, but he really does and he comes with his ‘A’ game when he wants to race. Today, he showed that for everybody.”

Kelly joined Joseph Taylor, Tre Green, and Justyn Toler to break their own district record in the 800 relay by finishing in 1:27.41. They set the mark in Thursday’s prelims with a 1:28.36.

Kelly, Caleb Root, Trey Miller, and Taylor capped off the meet with a win in the 1,600 relay in 3:20.26.

Taylor (first in 400 in 49.29), Root (first in 300 hurdles in 39.28), and Miller (first in long jump with 21-11.5) also had individual victories for the Titans. A.J. Schuller got a win in the shot put (54-3).

Kelly said he and his teammates feed off each others’ success.

“It really goes back to practice. Iron sharpens iron, so at practice, we’re always pushing each other, trying to out-battle one another in different lanes, and trying to get the best out of each other,” he said.

St. Francis dominated the distance events. Sam Arquette crossed the finish line first in the 800 (1:58.78), Ethan Cope won the 1,600 (4:21.36), and Logan Dykema got a win in the 3,200 (9:37.57). Cope, Kale Seymour, Arquette, and Jameson Heck also won the 3,200 relay in 8:05.15 on Thursday, while Keyan Holston won the discus (153-4).

For Perrysburg’s girls team, Hannah Kersten swept the distance events (5:06.48 in the 1,600 and 11:24.34 in the 3,200), while Ava Beeks won the 800 (2:18.88). The duo joined Natalie Sanders and Laura Valette to win the 3,200 relay in 9:27.00.

Whitmer’s Azurie Garrett swept the hurdles. She finished the 100 hurdles in 15.36.

Garrett got off to a huge start in the 300 hurdles, and, despite clipping the second-to-last hurdle, finished in 45.71. It was nearly half of a second better than her prelim time.

“At first, I think I’m not getting up there because I see my competitors ahead of me,” Garrett said of the 300 hurdles. “Then once I hit the curve, I just take off because I know I’m going to make it to the straightaway and it’s going to be a really smooth race.”

Nehemiah Coleman won the long jump (17-7.5) and Morgan Grove the discus (112-4) for Whitmer.

Other multi-event girls winners were Springfield’s Jessica Mason, who won the high jump (5-1) and pole vault (11-4). Northview’s Maley Roberts won the 400 (58.88) and joined Isabella Muir, Talitha Thomas and Harper Brighty to win the 1,600 relay in 4:04.28.
