Bowsher's offense finally clicks in football victory over Waite

Bowsher had not scored more than 14 points in any of its first five games.

On Thursday against Waite in City League football action, the Blue Racers put up 32 points in the first half alone, going on to win 38-24.

On its home field, Bowsher took the lead first when quarterback Jordan Singer found Zakir Smith for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good to leave the score at 6-0.

Daveyon Holman ran the ensuing kickoff back for a Waite touchdown, but the play was called back because of a penalty. That hardly deterred the Indians’ sophomore receiver, who scored on a 73-yard catch and run two plays later. Isiah Hyde caught the two-point conversion to give Waite an 8-6 lead.

The Blue Racers drove their way into the red zone at the end of the first quarter, and Raheim Mullings punched in a short touchdown early in the second to give the home team a 12-8 advantage. With Kaland Grier’s touchdown catch on the next Bowsher drive, the team surpassed its highest point total of the season and led 18-8.

Waite quarterback Zerias McGowan found Holman for another touchdown and ran in the two-point conversion himself to cut the deficit to 18-16. The Indians only had two touchdowns to Bowsher’s three, but their success on conversions meant they were only down by 2 points.

The Blue Racers put their stamp on the game with two quick scores before the half. Singer threw to Grier for a 31-yard touchdown followed by a successful PAT, and the ensuing kickoff ricocheted off a Waite player and was recovered by Bowsher. Mullings dashed 47 yards into the end zone with just seconds remaining, and another extra point made it 32-16 at halftime.

Steve Love extended the Bowsher lead to 38-16 with a short touchdown run in the third quarter. The speedy Holman had another highlight-reel touchdown called back when his 98-yard missed field goal return was wiped out by holding, but Waite found the end zone early in the fourth on a short Brandon Branch touchdown run and Tyqwaun Goetz conversion to make it 38-24.

Bowsher (2-4, 2-1 City League) will take a break from the conference schedule with a road game at Napoleon next Friday. Waite (1-5, 1-2) visits Start next week.
