Anthony Wayne boys, Perrysburg's Deal have strong opening rounds at Division I golf finals

COLUMBUS — A veteran cast that includes senior Logan Sutto for the Anthony Wayne boys golf team left the opening round of the Division I state tournament Friday on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course feeling optimistic.

The Generals head into Saturday’s final round just four strokes out of the lead, and Sutto is fourth individually after carding a 70 in what is his third state appearance.

“I feel good,” Sutto said. “After the practice round, I knew I was going to play well. I think my game is really good right now, I just have to minimize the bogeys. Off the tee, I put myself in some spots. Obviously for our team, we want to win badly.”

Anthony Wayne closed the opening round with a 308 that leaves it behind Akron Hoban (304), Upper Arlington (306), and Olentangy Liberty (306).

Senior Ian Briars is tied for 12th after shooting 75.

Seniors Myles Murphy and Ted Robertson join Briars and Sutto as returnees from a year ago when the Generals finished sixth and Sutto placed sixth individually.

“We have three seniors that have played varsity since they’ve been freshmen, and this group has won four straight league titles and is making its third straight appearance at the state tournament,” coach Pat Phillips said. “[We were] hopeful that playing such a tough schedule [would] help these guys play well at Scarlet against the best teams in the state.”

UA’s Brady Catalano is first with a 68, and Hudson’s Sam Fauver and Columbus DeSales’ Vaughn Harber are tied for second at 69.

Also in the boys state tournament, St. Francis junior Nicholas Miller is tied for 16th after coming in with a 76.

“He has just played solid golf all season long,” St. Francis coach Dan Sutton said.

In the girls Division I state tournament on Ohio State’s Gray Course, St. Ursula is ninth (338) and Perrysburg is 12th (355). Dublin Jerome leads the field with a 297.

Perrysburg senior Sydney Deal, who finished 11th a year ago, is tied for third with a 71. New Albany’s Mia Hammond is first with a 67.

“Sydney has been here four times, but I know that having them all together [is] extra special to her,” Yellow Jackets coach Ryan DeLauter said. “We’re extremely proud of the girls and how hard they’ve worked during their four years together.”

Competing as an individual, Anthony Wayne sophomore Sophia Stanton is tied for 14th at 76.

For St. Ursula, which finished ninth a year ago, junior Emma Myers and sophomore Sydney Socha both shot 84 and senior Sophia Antypas and sophomore Lindsey Kornowa each shot 85.

“We have three sophomores who have improved dramatically over the past year,” coach Jim McGowan said. “They’ve worked exceptionally hard to improve by 15 to 20 strokes over last year. Our upperclassmen, Emma Myers and Sophia Antypas, are solid and have provided great leadership and consistently great scoring. I feel like the girls operate as a unit and spend a lot of non-golf time together.”
