New night, same result for Bowling Green hockey with 5-2 loss against Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO — Bowling Green State University’s men’s hockey team suffered its second 5-2 loss to No. 9 Western Michigan in as many nights, falling on the road Saturday after a Friday home defeat.

Just as they did Friday, the Falcons hung with their ranked opponent early before conceding three unanswered goals to fall away.

The Broncos struck first on a goal from Matteo Costantini just one minute into the first period Saturday. BGSU answered on the power play at the 9:04 mark of the first as Spencer Kersten found the back of the net.

With under two minutes to play until the first intermission, Sam Colangelo scored to restore WMU’s one-goal lead.

Just past the midway point of the second period, Gustav Stjernberg scored for Bowling Green to make it 2-2. But the Broncos pulled in front once again with Ethan Phillips’ goal at the 15:03 mark of the second.

For the second straight night, Western Michigan (3-0-1) shut Bowling Green out in the third period. Colangelo completed a hat trick for the Broncos, making it 4-2 at the 12:29 mark and later finishing off the game with an empty-net goal.

The Falcons (1-5) were playing their second game since the reinstatement of coach Ty Eigner following an investigation into alleged hazing at an off-campus event involving student athletes on the team.

BGSU, which has lost five straight since winning its season opener, returns home next weekend for a two-game set against Mercyhurst. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
