McKenna Reitz, the volleyball coach at Springfield since 2010, announced her resignation this week via social media.
“As I write this, tears are rolling down my cheeks,” Reitz wrote. “It is time for me to be a mom and be present in my daughters’ lives as they play in their own volleyball matches and perform on stage. It is time for someone new to take over the program who can dedicate their time as the program deserves.
“I am forever grateful for the Springfield volleyball program and the light it has been in my life.”
A Northview graduate, Reitz joined the Springfield program in 2007 as an assistant before becoming head coach three years later. Her husband, Greg Reitz, is the head coach of the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at Lourdes University.
According to Reitz’s message, since 2010 the Springfield program produced 66 all-league players, 54 all-district players, two district players of the year, four Northern Lakes League players of the year, four all-Ohio players, an American Volleyball Coaches Association second-team All-America pick, and an AVCA honorable mention All-America selection this past season in Gretchen Sigman.
“Over the past 17 years, Springfield has been my home,” Reitz wrote. “I am a better, stronger woman, mother, and coach because of every single player who has come through my program, the parents for all of their support, and the district for always believing in my mission of developing strong women who excelled in the classroom, in the community, and on the court.”
