High school wrestling: Wauseon, Delta win district titles

NORWALK, Ohio — Wauseon captured its second straight Division II district wrestling on Saturday at Norwalk High School.

The Indians outscored Columbus DeSales 191½-165½ in the team standings, while Napoleon was third with 148 points.

Wauseon qualified eight wrestlers for next week’s state wrestling tournament in Columbus. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced.

Benicio Torres claimed the lone district title for the Indians, scoring a 9-0 major decision over Celina’s Zach Greber in the 144-pound final.

Wauseon’s Austin Kovar was runner-up a 190, as were Napoleon’s Alex Gonzales (120) and Romeo Cordoba (132) and Rossford’s Ayden Wilson (175).

The Indians totaled third-place finishes in five of the first six weight classes: Carter Stuckey (106), Joseph Lugabihl (113), Zavian LaFountain (120), Antonio Torres (132), and Jordan Cook (138); Ian Martin (165) was fourth.

For Napoleon, Roman Cordoba (126) and Isaac Lehman (285) were third, while Harrison Bohls (113) and Henry Eggers (190) were fourth.

DIVISION III

Delta held off Milan Edison to win the team title at the Rossford District on Saturday.

The Panthers had eight wrestlers qualify for state to produce a 168-156½ edge over the Chargers, who had four individual champions. Genoa was fourth (91), followed by Lakota (89½), Archbold (89), and Liberty Center (88). Oak Harbor was 10th (56).

Adam Mattin was the only individual champion for Delta, pinning Genoa’s Scott Fuller in 3:13 in the 113-pound final.

In the two other all-area finals matches, Otsego’s Trevor Wilcox defeated Oak Harbor’s Bodee Miller 8-1 at 120, and Liberty Center’s Xander Myers beat Delta’s Connor Sintobin 5-0 at 190.

Also securing district titles were Liberty Center’s Braedyn Tammarine (106), Archbold’s Brodie Dominique (144), and Elmwood’s Thomas Tyson (150).

Lakota’s Lane Thacker (132) and Grant Bomer (157), Archbold’s Wyat Ripke (215), and Swanton’s Evan Smigelski (285) were each runner-up.

Delta’s Tyler Barnes (120), Richard Flores (126), and Cass Chiesa (215) were third, while teammates Landon Lintermoot (144), Parker Cone (150), and Lane Lopez (157) were fourth.

Other area third-place finishers were: Genoa’s Ethan Powell (106), Liberty Center’s Drew Matthews (132), Evergreen’s Jack Stubleski (138) and Grant Richardson (190), and Lakota’s Braxton Quaintance (165).

In fourth were Port Clinton’s Gavin Cornell (132) and Malakii Pinkleton (165), Gibsonburg’s Antonio Salazar (138), and Lakota’s Gabe Garlick (175).
