High school boys basketball: St. Francis tops St. John’s for district crown

Fourth-seeded St. Francis de Sales outscored No. 3 seed St. John's Jesuit 14-2 in the second quarter en route to a 62-54 Division II district boys basketball championship victory Saturday at Central Catholic's Sullivan Center.

The Knights led 26-9 at halftime.

Raheem Brown scored 21 points and Alan Horton 18 for St. Francis (14-9), which advances to face Loveland at 7 p.m. Thursday at Elida High School.

Race Kowalczyk had 19 points, Ethan James 12, and Jayden Jones 10 for St. John's (15-8).

LIMA SENIOR 74, ANTHONY WAYNE 39

FOSTORIA — Second-seeded Anthony Wayne held close with top-seeded Lima Senior for a quarter before the Spartans pulled away in a D-II district championship game at Fostoria High School.

The Spartans and Generals were tied at 18 after a quarter, but Lima Senior opened up a 10-point lead at halftime before going on a 33-12 run in the third.

Lima Senior (22-2) will face Cincinnati Winton Woods at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elida. Anthony Wayne finishes with a 15-8 record.

DIVISION I

WHITMER 64, BRUNSWICK 62

AKRON — Tenth-seeded Whitmer prevailed in a wild finish against No. 2 Brunswick at Akron North, with Brunswick missing two free throws with four-tenths of a second to go that could have tied the game.

Whitmer (17-7) faces Canton McKinley at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kent State’s Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in a D-I regional semifinal.

Brunswick finishes with a 19-5 record.

DIVISION V

LIBERTY CENTER 44, ARCHBOLD 39

NAPOLEON — Eighth-seeded Liberty Center completed a spectacular run through the Napoleon district, holding on to defeat sixth-seeded Archbold after earlier defeating No. 9 Emmanuel Christian, No. 1 Tinora, and No. 4 Eastwood.

The Tigers jumped out to a 9-2 lead and were up 22-13 at halftime and 32-21 after three quarters. Archbold trimmed Liberty Center’s lead to three, but the Tigers prevailed.

Gavin Geahlen had 20 points for Liberty Center (13-12), which advances to face Columbus Bishop Ready at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mansfield Senior. Archbold (14-11) got 13 points from Sonny Phillips.

CASTALIA MARGARETTA 70, GENOA 57

KANSAS, Ohio — Top-seeded Castalia Margaretta withstood a second-half rally from Genoa to win the D-V district at Lakota.

Margaretta (24-1) led 42-29 at halftime, but Genoa closed the gap to 52-48 at the end of the third quarter.

The Polar Bears will face Gahanna Columbus Academy in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mansfield Senior. Genoa finishes with a 19-6 record.

DIVISION VII

ARLINGTON 53, OLD FORT 42

FOSTORIA — Second-seeded Arlington built on a five-point lead it established in the first quarter to come away with a district championship victory over top-seeded Old Fort.

Arlington (22-3) advances to regional semifinal play at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elida High School against Edgerton (17-8).

Old Fort finishes with a 23-3 record.

EDGERTON 47, EDON 37

BRYAN — Fourth-seeded Edgerton topped No. 3 seed Edon in the final of the D-VII Bryan district.

Edon finishes with a 15-9 record.
