Otsego girls finish 3rd, 6 locals win state titles in indoor track

GENEVA, Ohio — The Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches opened its annual indoor track and field state meet Friday at Spire Academy, with the Otsego girls team finishing third overall in Division III.

Six local individuals captured state titles in Friday’s D-III and D-IV action, with Divisions I and II set to compete Saturday.

Senior Brooke Simon led the way for the Knights girls, winning the weight throw with a mark of 52 feet, 6 inches. She also finished third in the shot put with a score of 40 feet, 6 inches.

Other high finishers for Otsego included juniors Kayla McCabe and Leah McCabe, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump with scores of 5 feet, 3 inches. Sophomore Ella Hartman was fifth behind Simon in the weight throw at 46 feet, 3 inches.

The Knights finished with 31 points as a team. Madeira (61) ran away with the D-III girls title, and Wyoming (33) edged Otsego for second.

On the boys side for Otsego, senior Nathan Strahm won the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 56.26 seconds. Other local D-III state champs included Eastwood senior Leah Emch in the girls 3,200 meters (11:28.28) and Oak Harbor junior Wyatt Augsburger in the boys 60-meter hurdles (7.98 seconds).

Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin won the D-III boys team title with 52 points.

In Division IV, Maumee Valley senior Michelle Li won the girls triple jump at 34 feet, 3.5 inches, and Fremont St. Joseph senior Sam Paeth took the boys pole vault championship at an even 16 feet.

Seneca East scored 42 points to claim the D-IV boys championship with Liberty Center putting up 20 points to finish sixth as the top local team. Oberlin (42 points) won it all in D-IV girls with Patrick Henry (23) coming in sixth.
