DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers announced Friday the promotion of Juan Nieves to assistant pitching coach.
Nieves was previously within the organization as the pitching coach for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens for the past two seasons.
Nieves played a key role in developing the young pitchers in the Tigers system for the past two years and will get a chance to work with some of them now at the big-league level.
A former major league pitcher, Nieves spent three seasons as a player with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has extensive experience as a pitching coach, including in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, and Miami Marlins.
The Tigers also announced the hiring of former University of Michigan pitching coach Chris Fetter as the team's new pitching coach. Fetter takes over for Rick Anderson, who was Detroit's pitching coach under former manager Ron Gardenhire, and will work with new Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.
