INDIANAPOLIS — The Toledo Mud Hens scored twice in the eight inning to take a two-run lead and held on for an 8-7 win over the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday at Victory Field.
Toledo’s Miguel Diaz allowed a ninth-inning solo home run to Blake Sabol, but struck out the other three batters he faced for his fifth save of the season.
The Mud Hens (79-60), who have won nine straight, held a 6-3 early lead, but needed to find their late offense as the Indians tied the game with one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
With one out and runners at the corners in the eighth, Josh Lester hit a sac fly to bring in John Valente as the go-ahead run.
One batter later, Daz Cameron singled home Zack Short for an insurance run. Cameron finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Corey Joyce (3-for-4) also added a two-run home run in the second inning.
Angel De Jesus (4-1) earned the win for the Mud Hens, pitching 1⅓ scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk.
Toledo starter Elvin Rodriguez lasted four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.
Toledo’s Brendon Davis hit a two-run double in the first inning, but Brendt Citta matched it on a two-run homer for the Indians in the bottom half. Short had a sac fly in the fourth inning.
Toledo will look to clinch a six-game series sweep against Indianapolis (70-69) in Sunday’s 1:35 p.m. finale.
