After their series opener was postponed because of weather, the Toledo Mud Hens and Indianapolis Indians got their six-game set at Fifth Third Field underway with a pair of daytime contests on Wednesday.
The Mud Hens took the originally scheduled opener 4-3 before falling 9-0 in the makeup from Tuesday. Both games lasted seven innings.
School groups provided the atmosphere for the late-morning first pitch of Game 1. Indianapolis scored in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Toledo put up all four of its runs in the bottom of the third.
Justyn-Henry Malloy singled to drive home Corey Joyce and Parker Meadows, tying the game, then Andre Lipcius’ double brought Malloy and Tyler Nevin around.
The go-ahead hit from Lipcius was playable for Indy’s center or left fielders, but the two miscommunicated as the field trip groups in the crowd brought the noise, and the ball fell between them.
The Indians added another run in the fourth, but Matt Wisler, a Bryan High School grad, held Indy hitless in the sixth and seventh for a two-inning save. Toledo starter Reese Olson earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings.
The second game, played in front of a mostly empty stadium, was close until the final inning. The Indians scored in the second and fifth before breaking through for seven runs in the seventh against relievers Miguel del Pozo and Aneurys Zabala.
Caleb Smith pitched the complete game for Indy, holding Toledo to three hits.
The Mud Hens (18-10) and Indians (11-17) meet again at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday at Fifth Third Field. Quinn Priester will take the mound for Indy. Toledo’s starter has not been announced.
