Mud Hens blanked in second straight loss to Rochester

The Toledo Mud Hens lost for the third time in a row and the sixth time in their past seven games Wednesday as the Rochester Red Wings picked up a 3-0 matinee win at Fifth Third Field.

An announced crowd of 10,300, mostly comprised of school field trip groups, saw former Detroit Tiger Nomar Mazara open the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. In the third, Darren Baker, the son of Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, singled home Richie Martin and came around to score himself on a Jake Alu groundout.

Toledo starter Brenan Hanifee pitched five innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Jose Urena, another former Tiger, struck out four Mud Hens and allowed four hits over four innings.

Toledo’s best chance to score came in the fourth, when three straight singles loaded the bases with one out. But Michael Papierski popped out and Jermaine Palacios grounded out, allowing Urena and the Red Wings to escape the jam.

The Mud Hens (22-24) have dropped the first two games of the six-game series against Rochester. The teams meet again at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, with Austin Bergner taking the mound for Toledo.
