INDIANAPOLIS — Nick Gonzales hit a second-inning grand slam and the Indianapolis Indians racked up 14 hits to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens 13-1 on Wednesday at Victory Field.
Gonzales’ two-out blast capped a five-run inning and closed the book on Toledo starter Austin Bergner (1-2), who took the loss. Jared Triolo also had an RBI single off Berger in the inning.
Toledo got on the board in the fifth inning as Kerry Carpenter doubled home Justyn-Henry Malloy.
But the big hits kept coming for the Indians, who added eight more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by home runs from Canaan Smith-Njigba (two-run) and Cal Mitchell (solo).
Smith-Njigba finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Miguel Andujar was 4-for-5 (double) with two RBIs.
Toledo catcher Donny Sands and right fielder Brendon Davis (two doubles) each had a pair of hits.
Indianapolis reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (2-2) pitched scoreless third and fourth innings to get the win.
The Mud Hens (23-29) went 6-20 in May.
Toledo is at Indianapolis (25-27) for the third of a six-game set at 6:35 p.m. Thursday at Victory Field. Reese Olson (2-3, 6.38 ERA) will take the mound for the Mud Hens against Quinn Priester (5-3, 4.96) for the Indians.
