Mud Hens clinch another series win with victory in Louisville

LOUISVILLE — The Toledo Mud Hens’ red-hot month continued with a 6-1 win over the Louisville Bats on Sunday, clinching Toledo’s fourth consecutive series win.

The Mud Hens had only won four series all season before the start of August. After Sunday’s win, they are now 18-7 this month.

Louisville got on the board first Sunday via a Matt Reynolds sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. But that was the only run Jack O’Loughlin allowed in his five-inning start for the Hens as he limited the Bats to just three hits. Four relievers worked an inning apiece and gave up just one hit the rest of the game.

Louisville struck out 10 times on the afternoon, compared to just four hits and three walks.

Toledo took the lead in the top of the fourth on Dillon Dingler’s two-run single, scoring Nick Maton and Eddys Leonard. Colt Keith made it 3-1 with a solo home run in the fifth.

Bats pitcher Levi Stoudt exited after the fifth. He gave up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

The Hens pulled away against the bullpen as Ryan Kreidler homered in the sixth and Keith singled to drive home Dingler. Andre Lipcius doubled in the ninth to score Keith and make it 6-1.

Toledo averaged more than 11 runs per game over the six-game series, led by Tuesday’s 24-run onslaught. The Hens might have scored even more had two games not been shortened to seven innings as part of a doubleheader.

Toledo (59-66) improved to 26-25 in the International League’s second half. It is the first time the Hens have been above .500 since the standings reset in late June.

The team returns home to Fifth Third Field this week for a series beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday against the Iowa Cubs.
