INDIANAPOLIS — The Toledo Mud Hens finished their six-game set at the Indianapolis Indians with a 5-2 loss Sunday, ending their season series against Indy with 14 losses in 18 meetings.
For the third game in a row, the Indians scored in first inning to take the lead. Chris Owings homered on the first at-bat against Mud Hens pitcher Bryan Sammons. Sammons went three innings, allowing the one run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Toledo tied the game in the top of the third when Colt Keith singled to score Nick Maton. Maton provided the RBI an inning later, singling to drive home Justice Bigbie.
Indianapolis pitcher Wil Crowe left after the fourth inning with the Mud Hens up 2-1. Crowe gave up four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
The Indians took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth against Toledo reliever Brenan Hanifee. With runners on first and third, Owings scored on a Canaan Smith-Njigba groundout, and Smith-Njigba later came home on a Ryan Vilade double.
Indianapolis (63-73) added RBI singles by Grant Koch in the sixth and Henry Davis in the eighth to make it 5-2. Hanifee gave up four runs on nine hits in four innings of relief.
Toledo (65-72) is 32-31 in the second half of the International League season, leaving it eight games behind first-place Durham with 12 games left. The Mud Hens begin their final home series of the year at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday against the Columbus Clippers.
