Mud Hens shut out by Bieber, Columbus in home finale

The Toledo Mud Hens were held hitless until the seventh inning in a 6-0 loss to the Columbus Clippers on Sunday, finishing their home schedule with a 35-39 record in games played at Fifth Third Field.

The Hens still won the six-games series with four victories over their in-state rival. A road trip for six games at the St. Paul Saints this week will close Toledo’s 2023 season.

Columbus (65-76) took the lead early Sunday with Oscar Gonzalez’s RBI double in the top of the first inning. Toledo starting pitcher Zach Logue settled in from there, finishing out five innings with one run allowed on four hits.

Two-time All-Star and 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber, on a rehab assignment from the Cleveland Guardians, started on the mound for the Clippers and held Toledo hitless for 3⅔ innings, striking out seven and walking three.

The Columbus bullpen took over for another three innings of hitless baseball before Justice Bigbie doubled off Hunter Gaddis in the bottom of the seventh to break the spell. The Hens managed one more hit on a Dillon Dingler double in the eighth, but they never advanced a runner beyond third base.

The Clippers added to their lead with four runs in the sixth. Johnathan Rodriguez and Daniel Schneeman notched RBI doubles, and Raynel Delgado hit a two-run single. Toledo reliever Garrett Hill shouldered the damage.

Sandy Leon’s solo home run in the eighth was the last run scored at Fifth Third Field for the year.
