DES MOINES — Rainy weather at Principal Park forced the suspension of Tuesday night’s Toledo Mud Hens series opener against the Iowa Cubs. Iowa led 6-2 in the top of the fifth inning when the game was delayed and later called for the night.
The teams will resume the game at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday, which was the original start time for Wednesday’s game. After the completion of the suspended contest, the Wednesday matchup will be played as a seven-inning game.
Spencer Torkelson, the former top draft pick who was sent back to Toledo this week after struggling with the Detroit Tigers, made his return to the Mud Hens lineup Tuesday and went 0 for 2 with a walk before the action was paused. He was on first base with one out in the fifth when the inclement weather took hold.
Iowa started off with a bang in the bottom of the first as Owen Caissie hit a grand slam with one out against Toledo starting pitcher Keider Montero. Luis Vazquez hit a two-run single the following inning to make it 6-0.
Montero was pulled after the third inning, finishing with six runs allowed on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Toledo got on the board in the fourth as Bligh Madris brought home Dillon Dingler with an RBI single and Justice Bigbie hit a sacrifice fly to score Eddys Leonard.
Former major leaguer Dan Straily started on the mound for the Cubs, giving up two runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts over four innings.
Torkelson, who got the start at first base, popped out in the first inning and grounded out to the pitcher in the third. He worked a walk from an 0-2 count in the fifth against reliever Sam McWilliams and was aboard with one away when the game was called 10 pitches into Dingler’s at-bat.
Toledo (30-26) is scheduled to pitch Ty Madden in Wednesday’s originally scheduled game. Chris Clarke is expected to take the mound for Iowa (26-31).
