Bryan native Matt Wisler has signed a minor-league contract with the Detroit Tigers and received an invite to spring training, according to online reports Monday.
Wisler was released by the Tampa Bay Rays on Sept. 7, 2022. Last season, he compiled a 3-3 record with a 2.25 earned-run average in 39 appearances, including five starts. Wisler held opponents to a .189 batting average and struck out 35 batters over 44 innings pitched.
The right-handed relief pitcher recorded seven holds and one save in four save opportunities.
Wisler was a seventh-round draft pick in the 2011 MLB draft by the San Diego Padres. He was one of a few players traded to the Atlanta Braves in a deal that sent Craig Kimbrel and B.J. Upton to San Diego.
Wisler has a career 4.59 ERA with 436 strikeouts and a 25-36 record with seven MLB teams.
