Toledo vs. Central Michigan: Everything you need to know

Toledo crossed out one objective last week, winning its sixth game of the season to become bowl eligible.

Now, the Rockets are looking for one more accomplishment this week against Central Michigan — winning a seventh game to secure their ninth straight winning season.

True, seven wins is well short of the 10-win average they’ve posted over the last four seasons, but it keeps the Rockets on par with recent success, posting winning records in 20 of the last 25 seasons.

The Chippewas enter Friday’s game at the Glass Bowl on a seven-game losing streak, so it stands to reason they won’t pose too much of an obstacle. In fact, a loss to UT would give the Chips their first one-win season in school history.

But record aside, the Chips statistically have one of the Mid-American Conference’s best defense, ranking in the top four in scoring defense, total defense, and passing defense.

Here’s a closer look at the Rockets regular season finale.

SERIES: The Rockets are on an eight-game winning streak against Central, and they own a 25-18-3 overall edge in the series. With a closer look, the Rockets are 13-5-2 in the last 20 games at the Glass Bowl, and they’re 3-1 on weekdays against Central.

LAST MEETING: Toledo took a three-score lead into halftime and cruised to a 30-10 win last year in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Terry Swanson had two first-half touchdowns as UT built a 17-0 lead. Swanson finished with 145 yards and two scores, and Shakif Seymour added 119 yards and a score as UT rushed for 310 yards and four scores. The Rockets defense held the Chips to 62 rushing yards.

LAST WEEK: The Rockets won for the third time in four games, racing past Kent State 56-34. UT had six scoring plays cover at least 10 yards, including Diontae Johnson’s 83-yard punt return late in the first half and Tyler Taffe’s 31-yard interception return. The Rockets posted 384 rushing yards as Bryant Koback (192 yards, two TDs) and Art Thompkins (122 yards, 2 TDs) each posted career highs.

Central hasn’t played since Nov. 10, a 24-13 loss to Bowling Green in which the Falcons rallied for a 13-0 hole. The Chips mustered only 166 total yards, but Malik Fountain (14 tackles) and Devonni Reed (10 tackles) each had double digit stops.

CHIPPEWAS TO WATCH: Junior quarterback Tommy Lazzaro leads CMU with 381 rushing yards, adding another 711 through the air. But he’s thrown 10 interceptions, helping the Chips post a MAC-worst -0.73 turnover margin.

On defense, senior linebacker Malik Fountain leads the MAC with 142 tackles, adding three sacks. Freshman defensive back Devonni Reed had 86 tackles, and junior lineman Mike Danna is first in the MAC with 10 sacks and third with 14.5 tackles for loss. The Chips defense allows 25.2 points and 344.6 yards per game, with only 148 yards per game coming through the air.

ROCKETS TO WATCH: On the heels of a career-best 192 rushing yards against Kent State, Bryant Koback leads the Rockets with 751 rushing yards and 11 TDs. The Rockets are the MAC’s second best rushing offense, averaging 217.3 yards per game with 24 TDs. They’re facing a Chips rushing defense that allows 196.6 yards per game and 23 TDs, ranking ninth in the MAC.

Quarterback Eli Peters has thrown for 1,393 yards and 14 TDs with six picks, and Diontae Johnson has 42 catches for 651 yards and seven scores.

GOING BOWLING ... MAYBE: The Rockets became bowl eligible last week, winning their sixth game of the season. They’ve gone to a bowl in seven of the last eight seasons. The only season they’ve missed out on a bowl bid? A 7-5 season in 2013.

OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES: While the Chips rank among the MAC leaders in scoring defense, total defense, and passing defense, they’re absolutely anemic on offense, ranking at the bottom in scoring offense (15.2 points per game) and total offense (261.4 yards per game). Their season-high in points is 24 in a loss to Buffalo, and they’ve been held to 13 or fewer points in five games.
