Marreon Jackson played 127 games for the University of Toledo men’s basketball team, before deciding Thursday to transfer to Arizona State for his final season.
Jackson, this year’s Mid-American Conference player of the year, put together an all-time great career with the Rockets.
Here are eight of his most memorable games with Toledo.
March 9, 2018 vs. Eastern Michigan
In his freshman season, Jackson made a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to give Toledo a 64-63 win over Eastern Michigan in a MAC semifinal. Jackson finished with eight 3-pointers — his current career high — and 26 points.
“Since the moment I started recruiting him, I knew he was just a big-play guy,” Toledo coach Tod Kowalczyk said after the game, “and obviously he was tonight.”
Toledo was playing without that season’s MAC player of the year, Tre’Shaun Fletcher.
“I feel like every game, I’m held to a high standard, and I have to perform,” Jackson said after the game. “That’s really what I came here to do.”
Nov. 21, 2019 vs. Notre Dame
Jackson had his best game to date against a Power Five team, scoring 23 points in an overtime loss at Notre Dame. He added eight rebounds and four steals. It potentially offered a glimpse of what Jackson can accomplish at Arizona State.
Jan. 18, 2020 vs. Akron
Jackson scored 36 points on 11-for-20 shooting, including 7-for-12 on 3-point attempts in a 99-89 victory at Akron. The 36 points stands as the second-highest total of his career. At one point late in the second half, Jackson scored 14 straight points to put the game out of reach.
Feb. 25, 2020 vs. Central Michigan
Jackson’s 37 points in this 93-81 victory stand as Jackson’s career high. He was 12 of 18 from the field, including 7-for-9 from behind the 3-point arc. Twenty-one of the points came in the second half.
“He hit hard shots, he hit easy shots, and he hit medium shots,” CMU coach Keno Davis said after the game. “We tried different ways to stop him, but whatever we did didn’t work.”
His 37 points was the most by a Rocket in 12 years, and he did it while overcoming a knee injury.
“Marreon Jackson was special,” Kowalczyk said after the game.
Dec. 16, 2020 vs. Marshall
Jackson dominated overtime in a road win over Marshall, which entered the game undefeated. Jackson scored 14 of his 23 points in the extra frame, closing the game out with a layup, a jumper, and four free throws. He also finished with seven rebounds, eight assists, four steals, and a block.
Jan. 23, 2021 vs. Kent State
Jackson scored the winning basket on a clutch steal and layup with nine seconds left to give Toledo a 76-74 win. After he missed a shot, Jackson swiped the ball from in the backcourt and converted. He finished with a season-best 31 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists.
“After I missed my shot, I knew I had to make a play,” Jackson said after the game.
Feb. 16, 2021 vs. Miami (Ohio)
Jackson’s 18 points, 10 rebounds, and career-best 11 assists notched the fourth triple-double in Toledo history in a victory over Miami. He joined Nathan Boothe, Tre’Shaun Fletcher, and Luke Knapke in achieving that feat. Jackson is the only one to do it at Savage Arena.
“His career is clearly one of the best in school history,” Kowalczyk said after the game.
March 5, 2021 vs. Ball State
Jackson recorded the second triple-double of his career in his final game at Savage Arena, an 89-70 win over Ball State on national television. He finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. For good measure, he moved into the top three in Toledo’s all-time assists list and into the top five in the MAC’s career 3-pointers list.
“To go out how I went out,” Jackson said afterward, “I’m very proud of that.”
