Former Toledo running back Terry Swanson is back on campus. 

This time as UT’s director of player development. 

“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for me to come back to my alma mater and help our players develop as young men,” Swanson said. “I look forward to helping them achieve their goals as football players and as students, and to also help them prepare to pursue their dreams after graduation.”

Head coach Jason Candle made the announcement Wednesday, welcoming the former Rocket back after a stint in the NFL and CFL. Swanson, a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection, rushed for 3,601 yards — fourth-most in program history — from 2014 to 2017. As a senior, he helped lead UT to the MAC title. 

“Terry was an outstanding leader for us as a player and we are certainly happy to have him back in our program,” Candle said. “As good of a football player as Terry was, he is an even better person. He will make a very positive impact on the lives of the young men in our football program.”

Swanson, a native of Aliquippa, Pa., rushed for 732 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman, splitting carries with future NFL Pro Bowler Kareem Hunt. Swanson was second-team All-MAC after rushing for 923 yards as a sophomore before surging for 1,363 yards and 14 touchdowns during his senior year. 

Swanson spent time with the Houston Texans in 2018 and the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2020.
