FAIRBORN, Ohio — The University of Toledo men’s basketball team nursed a one-point lead for the final minute and 25 seconds of its game Tuesday at Wright State, holding on for a 78-77 victory at the Nutter Center to improve to 3-0.
A game in which neither team led by more than five points in the second half, Toledo took the lead for good with 6:23 to go on a dunk by Dante Maddox, Jr. Sonny Wilson’s jumper with 2:31 remaining put the Rockets up 77-73, but Trey Calvin’s jumper 14 seconds later cut UT’s lead to two.
Ra’Heim Moss made the second of two free throws with 1:36 to go to extend Toledo’s lead to three, but Calvin answered again 11 seconds later to make it a one-point game.
Both teams missed jumpers on the next two possessions, and Toledo ran the clock down to 12 seconds before Wright State gained a final opportunity off a missed 3-pointer by Maddox. Off a timeout, Wright State worked the ball to Calvin, whose jumper at the buzzer was off the mark.
“We talked this summer about being a team that can win games on the offensive and defensive ends of the court,” Toledo coach Tod Kowalczyk said. “Those were two big-time stops against a great scorer in Trey Calvin. We played hard and competed. That’s what you need to do to win on the road.”
Maddox paced the Rockets with 20 points and seven rebounds, with Moss scoring 16 and Javan Simmons 15.
Calvin led Wright State (0-2) with 22 points. AJ Braun had 16 points, Tanner Holden 15 points, and Brandon Noel 10 points for the Raiders.
The Rockets head to Henderson, Nev., next week for the Ball Dawgs Classic at the Dollar Loan Center. UT faces New Mexico State at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, the University of California, Irvine, at 11:45 p.m. Nov. 22, and Indiana State at 2 p.m. Nov. 24.
