Toledo women rout Hillsdale 94-52 in final nonconference tuneup

The University of Toledo women's basketball team returned from a 10-day layoff from game action and did not miss a beat in a 94-52 win over Hillsdale on Saturday afternoon at Savage Arena.

Sophia Wiard paced the Rockets (7-3) with 20 points, Khera Goss added 16 points, Nan Garcia scored 13 points, and Hannah Noveroske had 10.

“I thought we played really hard today,” Toledo coach Tricia Cullop said. “Offensively, we were clicking really well in the first half, and defensively in the second half we did a much better job of guarding their 3s and we played a bit more aggressive defensively in the second half and I thought it really paid off. I'm proud of our bench for coming in and giving us some energy. Our senior leadership was big with Sophia playing really well and then Goss shot it really well too.”

Kendall McCormick led Hillsdale with 15 points.

In the final tune-up before Mid-American Conference play, Toledo was able to get 13 different players into the game and 12 of the 13 scored at least a point.

It was the highest-scoring game of the season for Toledo, which shot 52.9 percent from the field. The Rockets limited Hillsdale to 30.4 percent shooting overall and held a 49-23 rebounding advantage.

Toledo travels to Miami (OH) on Wednesday to open the conference schedule.

“Our non-conference schedule wasn't easy,” Wiard said. “We played a lot of tough teams. But it's a whole new season now. We're not looking back, we're looking ahead to MAC play. That's the most important thing right now.”
