WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Toledo senior Barend Botha slid down three more spots, falling into a tie for 60th place after shooting a six-over par 78 during the third and final round of the NCAA men’s golf regional at Purdue’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex Kampen Course on Wednesday.
Botha finished 13-over 229 for the tournament, putting himself in a three-way tie for 60th with San Diego State’s Jackson Moss and Tennessee Tech’s Sean Anderson.
"Barend had a tough start but kept fighting throughout his entire round," Toledo coach Jeff Roope said. "He had a few birdie opportunities where his putts just missed. We are extremely fortunate to have had Barend as a part of our program over the last four years and wish him all the best in his future career."
Although he had been in the top 20 (17th) following round one on Monday, a stomach illness hindered Botha’s performance in round two Tuesday as he shot seven-over to drop down to 57th.
On Wednesday, Botha was five-over on the front nine, got back some strokes on the back nine where he was one-over, but it wasn’t enough to gain ground on the competition.
However, he did end his day on a high note, collecting birdies on holes 15 and 16, and pars on 17 and 18.
Vanderbilt captured the team title with an impressive 54-hole score of 24-under par 840. The Commodores shot eight-under during play Wednesday.
Host Purdue (853) came in second with Florida (860), Arizona (861), and New Mexico (862) rounding out the top five.
Those teams clinched spots to the NCAA championships in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 26-31. Wisconsin's Cameron Huss was the lone individual to advance after winning a playoff.
