DEKALB, Ill. — John Alan Richter will get his first career start on Saturday at Northern Illinois.
The Toledo backup quarterback is getting the nod over Tucker Gleason, who is sidelined with an undisclosed injury, multiple sources told The Blade.
Richter replaced Gleason during the third quarter of last week’s loss at Buffalo. The third-year sophomore completed 16 of 23 pass attempts for 227 yards and two touchdowns. He was responsible for nearly 60 percent of UT’s 418 total yards despite only playing three possessions.
Gleason is completing a career-high 61.6 percent of his passes. The first-year starter has 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.
He left the Buffalo game with an apparent head injury.
Last week was the first extended playing time of Richter’s career, though he came to Toledo as a coveted recruit. He had a combined 5,330 yards and 53 touchdowns during his junior and senior seasons of high school.
Northern Illinois has the nation’s No. 10-ranked pass defense and it’s ranked first in preventing third-down conversions.
