ANNAPOLIS — The University of Toledo women’s basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 92-70 loss against No. 10 Maryland in the Navy Classic on Sunday.
Maryland (8-0) never trailed in the contest and held a 70-34 scoring advantage in the paint. The Terrapins shot 60.3 percent (38 of 63) from the field while the Rockets shot 45.3 percent (24 of 53).
The Rockets shot 75 percent (9 of 12) in the first quarter, but cooled off from there as they managed to make just 36 percent (15 of 41) over the final 30 minutes.
Toledo (4-2) was in the game in the first quarter where it trailed by just a 25-21 margin, but the turning point came in the second quarter when the Terrapins outpaced the Rockets 26-12.
Layups by Toledo’s Sammi Mikonowicz (Rossford High School graduate) and Faith Fedd-Robinson wedged in between a hoop from Maryland’s Ava McKennie put the margin at 39-30 in favor of the Terrapins with under four minutes remaining in the first half.
Maryland closed the half on a 12-3 run, taking a 51-33 edge into the locker room. Kaylene Smikle and Sarah Te-Biasu each scored four points during that stretch.
The Rockets were a little more stingy in their second game versus a quality Big Ten opponent. On Nov. 13 they suffered a 94-57 loss at Iowa.
Leading the Rockets was Nan Garcia who scored 13 points off the bench. Mikonowicz added 10 points.
On the other side, Maryland had five players in double figures, led by Saylor Poffenbarger who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Smikle chipped in 17 points for the Terrapins, Shyanne Sellers had 14 points and eight assists, Bri McDaniel scored 11 points, and Allie Kubek finished with 10 points.
