Former Toledo star Quinyon Mitchell 2nd in defensive rookie of the year voting

Former University of Toledo All-American Quinyon Mitchell finished second in voting for the Associated Press’ NFL defensive rookie of the year award.

Mitchell, a defensive back with the Philadelphia Eagles, received 239 voting points, finishing behind winner Jared Verse of the Los Angeles Rams (427). Mitchell received nine first-place votes and 23 second-place votes from the 50-person voting panel.

The AP’s NFL awards were announced Thursday night during the NFL Honors show.

Quarterbacks have only completed 54.5 percent of passes targeted against Mitchell for two touchdowns.

Mitchell, the No. 22 pick in last spring’s draft, has 46 tackles, two interceptions, and 12 pass breakups. Mitchell's coverage grade as compiled by Pro Football Focus ranks tied for sixth among starting cornerbacks.
