EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Toledo baseball team took the first game of a doubleheader against Oregon on Saturday, defeating the Big Ten’s Ducks 5-3.
The victory against Oregon, ranked 19th in the Baseball America preseason Top 25, came in the Rockets’ second game of the season.
Toledo dropped the second game of the doubleheader 9-0.
In the first game, Toledo took the lead over the Ducks with a four-run outburst in the sixth inning. Troy Sudbrook connected on a two-run single to right, and Cole Cahill followed up with a two-run single up the middle.
Oregon rallied in the eighth with a Mason Neville solo home run, a run scored on a wild pitch, and a run scored on a fielder’s choice.
Charlie Scholvin scored an insurance run for Toledo in the ninth on a fielder’s choice.
RJ Shunck started and picked up the victory for Toledo, pitching five innings of four-hit ball while striking out three and walking none for his first decision of the season. Logan Jones picked up his first save.
Julien Hernandez took the loss for Oregon.
In the second game Saturday, the Rockets were held to four hits compared to the seven that they had in the upset win.
The Ducks won the series opener 9-2 Friday. UT and Oregon will conclude the series with a 3:05 p.m. game Sunday.
