University of Toledo signee Leroy Blyden, Jr., is a finalist for Michigan’s Mr. Basketball award.
The 6-foot point guard from University of Detroit Jesuit is averaging 21.5 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals per game.
“He’s a tremendous player, and he plays with a lot of confidence,” UDJ coach Pat Donnelly told The Blade after Blyden led the Cubs to a win over St. John’s Jesuit in December. “He’s got a lot of poise, and he’s a guy that can go get you a basket when you need one.”
Blyden has led UDJ in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals the past two seasons. In 2024-25, he’s making nearly 70 percent of his 2-point shots and shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc. Earlier this season, he scored 39 points against defending state champion Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.
Quickness and a controlled pace are Blyden’s strongest attributes, as he can create a fast break if the defense gets complacent.
Blyden will reunite with former high school teammate Sonny Wilson at UT next season.
The other finalists are Michigan commit Trey McKenney of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Iowa State commit Macari Moore of Ann Arbor Huron, and Lance Stone of Detroit Renaissance. A winner will be announced March 10.
