Former Toledo men’s basketball players Simmons, Lewis find new homes

University of Toledo big man Javan Simmons isn’t going far.

The former Rocket committed to Ohio University on Monday.

Simmons, a 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore forward, averaged 12.5 points on 57 percent shooting with 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists last season. He was the Mid-American Conference freshman of the year in 2023-24.

The central Ohio native was recruited heavily by the Bobcats out of high school but ultimately chose Toledo.

Why Javan Simmons left Toledo men's basketball for Ohio

Sam Lewis is transferring to Virginia. He became the first commit for newly hired head coach Ryan Odom. 

The smooth 6-foot-6 guard has an effortless offensive game that led to 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists last season. He shot 47 percent from the field and was a second-team All-MAC player.
