Toledo Walleye goalie Jeff Lerg was named the ECHL goaltender of the week today after posting a 4-0-0 record with a 1.71 goals-against average.
Lerg, who is in his second season with the team, won all four games he started last week. He had a .939 save percentage.
Lerg started the week with a 29-save performance in a 5-1 home win over Indy last Wednesday and followed that up with 31 stops in a 4-3 shootout victory Thursday night in Brampton. He then posted 15 saves in a 2-0 shutout of Manchester at the Huntington Center on Saturday. It was the fifth shutout for Lerg in a Walleye uniform. He finished the perfect week with 33 saves Sunday at Indy in a 4-3 win.
“Jeff performed this past week like he has all year, at an elite level,” Walleye coach Derek Lalonde said.
The native of Livonia, Mich. currently ranks second in the ECHL with 11 wins, while he ranks ninth in goals-against average (2.07). After a brief call up to the American Hockey League, Lerg stopped all 11 shots he faced while playing a relief role for the San Diego Gulls in a game last month.
This is the second time in his career that Lerg has won the weekly award as he took home the honors in March. He posted a 3-0-0 record and 0.65 goals-against average for the week of March 16-22.
Lerg also was named ECHL goaltender of the month in November of 2014 for going 7-0-1 with a 2.65 goals-against average. He also earned All-ECHL second team honors last season.
Lerg, 29, holds the Walleye career record with 43 wins.
Prior to turning professional, Lerg played four seasons at Michigan State University. The 5-foot-6 and 165-pound goaltender led the Spartans to the NCAA national championship in 2006-07.
