Walleye drop shootout at Indy

FISHERS, Ind. — Indy converted its final two attempts in the shootout to claim a 3-2 ECHL victory over the Toledo Walleye on Tuesday at the Fishers Events Center.

Kevin Lynch scored on Indy’s third attempt to extend the shootout to extra skaters, then Cam Hunsinger made his fourth-round attempt to win it for the Fuel.

First-round skater Brandon Hawkins had Toledo’s only successful attempt in the shootout, with Mitchell Lewandowski, Colby Ambrosio, and Sam Craggs unable to connect.

The point in the standings for the overtime loss moved Toledo closer to clinching the ECHL’s Central Division title. The Walleye (42-16-10, 94 points) can clinch the division as early as Friday, should it win at Bloomington or Fort Wayne (38-21-7, 83 points) lose at home in regulation to Indy.

Tuesday’s game went to overtime and a shootout after Indy leveled things on Lynch’s power-play goal with 5:42 to go in regulation. The Fuel gained the man advantage following Matt Anderson’s high-sticking minor.

Lewandowski opened scoring with 15 seconds to go in the first period off assists from Anderson and Hawkins. Jarrett Lee tied it 6:01 into the second period on an Indy power play, and Toledo regained the lead with 4:10 to go in the second on Cole Gallant’s power-play goal. Anderson and Ambrosio assisted.

Toledo was on the power play for 2:33 in the seven-minute overtime but did not convert.

Jan Bednar started in goal for Toledo and had 32 saves on 34 shots. Ben Gaudreau stopped 27 of 29 shots for Indy.

The Walleye conclude their final road trip of the regular season this weekend with an 8 p.m. game Friday at Bloomington and a 4 p.m. contest Saturday at Cincinnati. Toledo then hosts Fort Wayne on April 11 and Indy on April 13 to wrap up the regular-season slate.
